Music tone, costume and appearance appropriation- 3
On my last post, I explain about how cultural appropriation on black cultural causes stereotype. But there are another a few more points I would like to point it out. How do we harm them? What do we make those cultural being appropriated people feel?
Taking their elements and use it as our own are causing them to feel struggle to be affirmed feels trivialized. For example, black people are being pressure to straighten their natural curly hair. Because most companies and jobs does not accept to hire those which have their natural black hair style. These are also happening in school, where there is rules which banded them to have these kind of "hair style". Their hairstyle might not be appealing in social media, and it is been call in a bad way when they have their natural hair style. But, celebrities are being encourage do make their hair look curly. Most white girls does it, it is call beauty and appealing. White girls being praised for making these styles trendy. Which makes black girls need to fight for what they are to protect themselves, protect the way they naturally look. This is a Instagram star being called appropriating black culture, by making her skin tan and wearing a wig:

Society values white more for doing the same things black do. There are many example in pop cultural, lets take the example above. The same thing where white star is being appreciated for wearing curly wigs, but not those who have natural curly hair. The last point which I want to point is, it ignores the racism of black community is dealing with. For example, most people think that black people is dangerous because they would go crazy, they should be thrown in jail and killed by police at terrifying rates. This causing them to be seen as a dangerous appearance, and at some point there is also white people even recording videos just to test them out by mocking them, or calling them in sensitive term.
This is the harm when we appropriate other's culture, that is why many are Cautious and Against this act. It is not just about "borrowing" a culture, but this is causing problems to others that we can't see it. Culture is for us to protect its value, is a history of knowledge of what we can learn from. Cultural appropriation is complicated, many having problem to differentiate cultural appreciation, exchange and misappropriation. That is also one of the reason of cultural appropriation is happening.
